[Gabbin’ with Gamers] Gianny from BroskiPlays

By Brett Hrin Dec4,2017

Thank you for joining The Switch Effect on today’s Gabbin’ with Gamers. With us is Gianny van Goch, reviewer and owner of BroskiPlays. BroskiPlays is a Twitter and YouTube Nintendo Switch news and reviews source that makes sure you are kept up to date on all the latest that the Switch has to offer. Making the scene in July 2015 on Twitter and August 2016 on YouTube, there is not a game that escapes Gianny’s site. With entertaining video commentary and over 57k tweets, we had to speak with the man behind BroskiPlays.

Gianny, thank you for giving us this interview. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hi everyone, I am Gianny van Goch and I am 21 years old. I am the creator and host of BroskiPlays, a Nintendo Switch review channel with a bunch of unique Switch reviews about all sorts of games. I live in the Netherlands and I’ve been on YouTube now for 11 years.

What was the first console and game that you owned?
Great question! That would definitely be the NES together with the Super Mario Bros + Duck Hunt bundle! An old classic!

Do you have any fond childhood memories based around gaming?
Ooh indeed, I remember playing Super Mario World for days on the SNES back when i was a child. I was also involved in Call of Duty for quite some time, but nothing really beats the warm feeling of Nintendo.

Were any of your family members enthusiastic about gaming?
Yeah, actually my dad was a huge retro hardcore gamer. He used to own the NES, SNES, Atari 2600, Nintendo 64 and many more retro consoles! He gave me his NES when I was five years old and I was hooked to gaming ever since!

Let’s jump forward a bit. Tell us about the origins of BroskiPlays.
Let’s talk about the origins of Broski in general. I started YouTube at the age of 10 when I was bullied a lot at school and when YouTube was still an unknown sensation here in The Netherlands. I mean YouTube grew already heavily in the U.S. but here in The Netherlands no one heard about this brand new video sharing website. It was September 30, 2006 that I uploaded my first ever video. During my YouTube career, I was the owner of “TheTrueGamerHD” which had 4,200 subscribers, “FPSBroski” which had 10,000 subscribers and now “BroskiPlays” which currently rocks 1,760 subscribers.

When you first began your Twitter and YouTube account, the Nintendo Switch was still a concept. What got you into focusing primarily on Nintendo’s newest console once it was released?
When I saw the reveal trailer at E3 2017, I was having an actual nerdgasm. No joke this was something that I was dreaming about for decades. I have tried to play Triple A titles on to go by streaming from my PC, buying a NVidia Shield Portable and even paying a subscription but no other device or service was more satisfying than the portability of the Nintendo Switch. Look at Skyrim!

What got you interested in social media?
YouTube, I guess, however back in the 2006 we (people from The Netherlands) actually had our very own social media platform called “Hyves”. However it was scrapped, but in terms of how I got on Twitter I guess it was because Twitter is a really handy platform for sharing and interacting with your fans and colleagues. So really, it was an easy decision.

Here’s one to get you thinking. If you weren’t reviewing and reporting the latest Nintendo news, what would you be doing?
I am actually a pretty talented person (no bragging intended). I mean I’ve done several different things in my past like writing songs, Photoshop designing, video editing, drawing, game developer, modder and even being a game tester for a short period. So yeah, I have enough stuff to do if it wasn’t for YouTube, haha!

Time to “switch” gears. We at The Switch Effect are obviously big fans of Nintendo’s new console as we know you are. What are your impressions of the console now that the console has been out for a few months?
To be honest, the Switch is honestly the best console of the last decade. I mean the Wii had motion controls, the Wii U had a gamepad, the Nintendo DS had a touch screen, but guess what the Switch has? All of that plus portability. The indie library is amazing as well from cult classics like The Binding of Isaac, Shovel Knight, Stardew Valley, Rocket League, SteamWorld Dig 2 and many others to Triple A ports like Skyrim, DOOM, L.A. Noire and even freaking FIFA is here. What else do you need? Well let’s talk about the impressive Nintendo 1st party line-up including Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and more. Moreover, with Pokémon, Yoshi and a new Kirby coming, I can say without a doubt that the Switch will “switch” up the best consoles list in favor of Nintendo.

Which new games are you looking forward to the most?
I am a huge fan of indie games and games such as Terraria, The Escapists 2, Enter the Gungeon and many more coming to the Switch and being portable is a dream coming true. Also Pokémon for Switch, which I hope it will be a remake of Red/Blue. Please Game Freak do it!

Last question now that we’ve run you through the gauntlet. Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I would like to thank my dog for supporting me by being old and slow, my cat for not give a dongus about me and my mom and dad because credits. Nah joking, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Also, if you want to add me just add me, see my friend code below and see you on the Switch side. Thank you to The Switch Effect for this fantastic interview. My future self will love reading this to his ancestors for sure!
