[Owner Outreach] Floyd from Video Games Monthly

By Brett Hrin Dec1,2017

The Switch Effect is excited to welcome Floyd, the lovable 8-bit mascot for Video Games Monthly. If you’re into retro games, then there’s a good chance you know about this amazingly awesome monthly video game subscription service. If not, then just know that each month, they send you a box of retro games spanning over 20 consoles and nearly 50 years of gaming directly to your house. And the best part? YOU KEEP THE GAMES!  If you haven’t left our site yet to sign up, then stick with us a bit longer as we learn more about the company that is allowing all gamers, young and old, to play the past into the future.

Floyd, thank you so much for allowing us to speak with you. Let’s start off with an easy one. Tell us about yourself.
Hey, it’s your boy Floyd. Nice to meet ya! What is there to say about me? I have 8 bits, I have two dimensions, and one love: gaming.

It’s your boy Floyd. Nice to meet ya!

What was the first console/game you ever owned?
Ah yes. Everyone remembers their first. There was this great machine at our local laundromat called “CHANGE.” You put in a dollar, and four quarters came out! I won every time! The place eventually shut down, and when it did, I stole….er, was able to procure the machine. Good times.

Growing up, do you have any fond childhood memories around gaming?
No. I’m an 8-bit sprite. A childhood didn’t exist for me! I…I never actually thought about that until just now. I may be having an existential crisis…oh man I gotta lie down.

For those who might not be familiar with Video Games Monthly, can you tell us a little more about this company and how it went from a concept to a full-fledged business?
Sure. Some guys were out buying video games. Then they went home and had some drinks. Then they wanted to buy more games, but realized they shouldn’t leave the house. So then the thought was…why not have games delivered to your door? Boom. VGM was born. Then I basically did all the work while the rest of the crew continued to do nothing.

One question that we’re sure is on everyone’s mind is where do you find all these retro games?
Your mother.

Floyd! Anyway, moving on. As mentioned earlier, you carry games for over 20 consoles dating back to the Atari 2600. Can your members expect to see any new consoles in 2018?
Hmm, if we were to add a new system to our service, which would you like to see? I’ve answered your question with a question. Oh well, that’s what you get for giving me an existential crisis before! For realz as demand grows the VGM team will be expanding.

Look at all those retro games you can get in your box?!

Video Games Monthly has a big presence on social media. There’s always a HUGE amount of unboxing pictures and videos posted across Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Pinterest. What has the feeling been around the office of the success and growth since you sent out your very first box all those years ago?
8 bit fist bumps have been thrown around the office a lot. The VGM Team is exhausted but excited for the future.

Another fun aspect of your company is the weekly contests you host online. Whether it be tagging your friend, making a commercial, or creating a meme, they are always innovative and really get the creative juices flowing. On top of that, the free games you giveaway are on the higher tier including Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Turtles in Time, Final Fantasy II, and more. As we move into 2018, can you tease any upcoming contests and what games may be given away?
That? Well, um…the thing about that is? It’s a secret to everybody.  Until you open the December 2017 box.  Huge Giveaway to come!

Let’s “switch” gears. We at The Switch Effect are obviously HUGE fans of Nintendo’s newest console. What are your thoughts on it?
Ah yes, I have heard of the Switch. Seems pretty cool. They should make games with me in it.

What games are you most looking forward to playing?
Really anything! These slobs at the office have me working non-stop and I’d love to have just two minutes to rub together so I could play a game!

Is there anything else you’d like to share?
Yeah. This interview took me like 9 hours to write back to. You know how hard it is to type when you don’t have fingers? It’s not easy. Also, if you want to be super sweet like me, your boy Floyd, make sure to check out www.videogamesmonthly.com. Plans start as low as $29.99.

Each month you will get a variety of retro games shipped to your door that YOU KEEP! And you will never receive a duplicate game thanks to the Video Games Monthly exclusive game tracker.

Ok, I hear what you’re saying….“What if my significant other doesn’t let me sign up? SIGN UP! It’s a win win! While they are sleeping on the couch you’ll have a ton of awesome retro games to play.

Thanks for the interview. Have a nice day.

Thank you for Floyd for spending some time with us and looking forward to December’s unboxing pics and videos!
