Normally I’m not a fan of 2D platformers and sidescrollers. I couldn’t really get into games like Hollow Knight and Celeste so I originally thought I wouldn’t like Morkull when I saw it online. But then I read the description and immediately knew that I had to give it a try.
The concept that sets this game apart from the others is that the main character is aware that he’s in a video game and occasionally interacts with the players or makes remarks about the game and its creator. This is a concept that I have loved ever since I played OneShot years ago
So I gave it a shot, but after playing for an hour, I was a little disappointed with how frequently there was dialogue. Sometimes I could spend ten minutes or more navigating my way around the map before seeing any new dialogue. For a game that heavily markets fourth wall breaks, I didn’t see as many as I would have liked.
But whenever there was dialogue, it was legendary. The writing was very clever and the jokes were golden. The game is fantastically self-aware, so much that it isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself and the developers. I love this kind of writing and I’m positive there are others who will appreciate it too.

The rest of the game is pretty standard. You play as Morkull, he’s the villain of the story and his goal is simply to escape from the game so he can rule the world. Your job is to help him. As you venture across the world, there are a number of enemies and environmental traps that try to stop you, but the controls and combat are simple and quick so you can glide through the gameplay easily.
The game also looks fantastic. The traversable parts of the world looks decent but the backgrounds are all magnificent. I said I don’t play these kinds of games too often, but of the ones I have played, this one had the best looking backgrounds. You can tell the developer put a lot of effort into the artwork.
So is Morkull Ragast’s Rage a game you should look into? Well for starters, many of the jokes are very dark and edgy. There’s a lot of stuff you’d expect to see from Deadpool, which means it’s not for the younger audiences. It’s also a very short game, you could beat it in under 5 hours.
That’s not too bad for something that costs $18 but it’s short playtime and mature themes does limit the audience significantly. If you like 2D action-platformers and tend to like dark humor, you’ll like this one.
