Why Should You Avoid Speed Capping in Umamusume: Pretty Derby?

First, what is speed capping? Technically it’s a term that I made up for when you reach 1200 points in speed. Hold up, why would you want to avoid maxing out your speed? Doesn’t better stats equal better career? You’re not wrong, but hitting the speed cap early will significantly decrease the power of your build.

If you go all in on speed whether through training, cards, or legacies, you’re going to suffer in the long run if you complete the URA Finale scenario. This is because for every race you complete during the URA Finale phase, you get a bunch of extra stat points. If you hit the speed cap two or three rounds early, you won’t be taking advantage of all those extra points at the end.

Trust me, there’s nothing worse than hitting 1200 Speed after winning the URA Finale Qualifiers and then seeing +0 Speed pop up six times. Managing your trainings so that the bonuses naturally bring you close to the speed cap allows you to put more effort into other areas while still getting close to the cap.

At the end of the qualifier round you gain 13 points to each stat automatically and you get the same boost at the end of the semifinals. Winning the final race gets you a massive 33-point boost to each stat if you don’t have the Directors Fan. This means that the URA Finale Phase gets you a guaranteed 59 extra points to each stat.

If your speed is already 1200 when you enter the URA Finale Phase, you’re missing out on those 59 speed points. But in theory if you were to take 59 points out of speed and put them somewhere else before the URA Finale Phase began, Speed would still cap while another stat gets a 59-point boost.

It’s hard to show the exact pathing I took, but here are the first two Haru Urara that I built. The first one was heavily focused on speed, she hit 1200 not just before the URA Finale Phase began, but around 10 times earlier than that. The second Haru was at around 1000 when the URA Finale Phase began, I put lots of points that would have hit 1200 earlier into other areas and the finale brought her up to 1130 speed. But now she’s a much more well-rounded character.
