If you like walking simulators, then boy do I have a weird one for you. Bambas! is a silly little game where you play as a pair of sneakers and the world is your playground. While the game is fun and not as infuriating as other kinds of walking simulators, the controls and mechanics can sometimes be a nightmare.

Each joystick controls the direction each foot moves while the L and R triggers allow each foot to move forward one step at a time. The movement is pretty realistic in terms of how feet work but sometimes they do things that shouldn’t be possible while trying to stick to the rules of physics at the same time. This is what makes the game so difficult at the start.

Going in a straight line is simple and fast paced, but once you try turning, the gameplay stops dead in its tracks. When you individually control the movement of each foot, turning and doing small movements becomes super hard. When turning, you constantly have to realign the location of each foot before you can move forward again.

Once you get the hang of the controls, the game slowly starts becoming fun. There’s a fairly big world for you to explore with a variety of quests and secrets. Stomp on all the manholes and leaves or deliver pizza on a scooter, there’s no shortage of things to do.

Some of the quests are fun like riding the scooter or challenging like the floor is lava challenge. But many were bland quests that only served as a way to force you to explore the map. These became boring quickly and I never went out of my way to complete them.

With the size of the map and the number of different quests and NPC’s with their own stories, the game has enough going on to keep you entertained for a few hours. I also thought both the visuals and radio were solid.

However, the camera was a huge letdown and made certain tasks hard. Because the camera is fixed and often janky, it was very hard to see what was in front of you. If you could change the camera angle independently of your footsteps or change the height and field of view, the game would have been better.

Other than that, Bambas! is an okay game. It has lots of style and is enjoyable for a few hours but will become boring rather quickly for some. But for a game that only costs $15, it’s solid.

6/10
