Normally I’m not a fan of mini games. I’m not talking about things like fishing in Stardew Valley, but rather collections of micro games. You won’t ever catch me playing games like Wario Ware or those x in 1 games collections. I just don’t really see the appeal in those.

But a little while ago, I was introduced to D.U.C.K. and I finally found one that I liked. The name stands for Dangerous Ultimate Cartridge Kidnapper, but it’s also a game about ducks. It’s a very short game, but it’s honestly lots of fun.

A group of ducks find a mysterious game cartridge that claims to contain 100 games but it turns out to be a trap. An evil spirit threatens to imprison them as characters in the game if they can’t beat all of the games. Each character takes turns playing a selection of random mini games to win their freedom.

There are different difficulty levels which dictate how many mini games you must play and how many attempts you have. But at its core foundation, it’s all about playing different mini games that should take less than a minute to complete.

Many of them are pretty easy and only take one attempt to beat. Some are harder, like the one where you have to go from one side of the screen to the other without being seen before the timer runs out. It should only take one attempt, but it took me nearly a dozen tries before I could beat it.

It sucks that you get stuck on like 30 seconds worth of different loading screens for a 10 second mini game, but many of the games are actually quite fun. Once you’ve unlocked a game in the story mode, you’re allowed to play them freely as well.

If you Speedrun through the story mode and don’t fail too many times, the game might only take you an hour or two to beat. If you want to try to complete harder modes, unlock all the games, or just find one that’s fun, you can get more out of the game.

For $12, it’s not terrible, though I would recommend waiting for a sale before buying. This is because while many of the games are fun and there’s 100, they’re just too short to really keep you engaged long-term. If there’s ever a 50% off sale, I’d say it’s a must-buy, but at it’s current price, it has a very niche audience.

7/10
