Before I say anything about the game itself, I need to issue a warning because the game is not for everyone. The Edge of Allegoria has been out on Steam for nearly a year, but not that many people knew about it. Now it’s on the Switch and I genuinely have no idea why they allowed it because it’s the most unhinged game that I have ever played.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very good RPG. It looks and feels like old-school Pokemon and has a decent learning curve while also being fun. But it’s unapologetically diabolical. The first hour of gameplay will throw enough savagery your way to fill an entire Deadpool movie. The characters are mean, your inner dialogue is ruthless, and the world is fucked.

There’s crude language, swearing, and dildos around every corner. It’s a fun RPG on the surface, but it might be a bit much for most adults even. You can see some photos of the language HERE and HERE. All these examples are right at the start of the game. Now that we got that out of the way, we can talk about the game itself. But there isn’t much left to say because the crudeness is really the main selling point.

You play as a simple man doing simple things, but then you’re told to stop being simple and to do bigger things. So that’s exactly what you do. You travel from town to town, beating up squirrels and other animals, while you contemplate your miserable existence. That’s really all there is to it. The story is simple but the RPG mechanics and ridiculous dialogue are what keep the game moving forward.

Combat is very similar to Pokemon, but you’re the one doing the battling. Encounter a goblin? Hack at it with an axe. Find a little crow on the side of the road? You guessed it, obliterate it with whatever gear you find along your adventure. Then sell all their parts for money to continue the vicious cycle. The combat itself is fun and engaging, and the map is huge, so there’s always room to explore or do a little extra grinding here and there.

For $25, you’re going to get between 18 and 25 hours worth of gameplay, which is really good for the amount of chaos that’s being thrown at you. The Edge of Allegoria is not for everyone, but you’ll definitely get your fair share of funny and cringe moments.

4/5
