The first 20 minutes of today’s Nintendo Direct were dedicated to a massive celebration of the Super Mario Bros franchise because of its 40th anniversary which is tomorrow in Japan.
The first announcement was that the sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie is titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and will be released in April 2026, just seven months away. The movie will be produced by Illumination again and it was confirmed that Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Kevin Michael Richardson are all returning as their characters from the first movie.
Nintendo then announced that that the original Super Mario Galaxy games will be making their way to the Switch October 2nd. Both games will be together as one bundle but I hope it’s not a limited release like what Nintendo did with the trilogy port a few years ago.
Nintendo also revealed a brand new Mario Sports game in the form of Mario Tennis Fever. This doesn’t just include a sports game but an adventure game as well! I’m not a huge sports game fan so I won’t be checking it out, but I think having an adventure mode is cool and I bet lots of people will like this one.
A Nintendo Switch 2 edition of Super Mario Bros Wonder was also announced which includes extra content but I think the best announcement outside of the movie was the reveal of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, which comes out next year. It’s been way too long since the last Yoshi game.
