I was never really a fan of the context of Tim Burton movies, but the style and aesthetic always appealed to me. I always enjoy when games or other kinds of media give off similar vibes. When I first found out about Gloomy Eyes, I knew nothing about the content other than it having Tim Burton-esque elements. I didn’t even know that it had a short film back in 2019. But I became interested in it.
Gloomy Eyes takes place in a world where the sun has grown to hate all of humanity. As a result, it chooses to never rise again, plunging the planet into permanent darkness. Without sunlight, zombies begin to rise from their graves and roam the world. But instead of being dangerous and feared like in most zombie media, they’re viewed as outcasts. The story follows a zombie named Gloomy and a human girl named Nena.
The two of them join forces to bring sunlight back to the dreary world, and you control both of them, switching back and forth between the two. The game features a variety of puzzles across more than a dozen stages as the two venture out on their journey. While the story itself is good and the puzzles are often fun, I believe the real hook for this game is the visuals. The world looks fantastic, and going through each level was a delight.
So much detail was put into each environment, and the backgrounds all look phenomenal. There’s so much charm in how the game looks and feels, and it made me think back to games like Little Nightmares and Echo Generations. I had a blast simply enjoying the artwork of the game.
Gloomy Eyes is a relatively short game; you can beat it in around 3 to 6 hours if you don’t get distracted by the visuals constantly like I did. Such a short game might be a bit much for people to fork over $25, but I think it’s worth it for the immersive experience. If you like the style of Tim Burton, Gloomy Eyes is worth checking out.
