When I was growing up, I was a big fan of Nickelodeon. I didn’t care much for SpongeBob but Avatar, Fairly Oddparents, and Danny Phantom were some of my favorites. So when I found out about Dice of Destiny and all the characters that were in it, I became really excited. But is the game worth it or is it just nostalgia?
The game starts with Timmy Turner making a wish. He wants to actually be in a game world to cure his boredom, but things go wrong. He ends up in the world of a TTRPG, but characters from other Nickelodeon shows get sucked in with him. Unfortunately, they can’t return to their own worlds without finding all the dice and beating the game.
There are characters from The Fairly Oddparents, SpongeBob SquarePants, Danny Phantom, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Jimmy Neutron, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rugrats, and My Life as a Teenage Robot. A handful of the them are playable and there are characters from each show who are NPC’s. There’s also full voice acting, which I thought was amazing.
The characters and nostalgia are great, but the gameplay wasn’t quite what I was hoping for. The world is a mix of different settings from each show like Bikini Bottom and the Ghost Zone. Each environment has a bunch of levels to go through. The Tangle is the hub world where you can interact with characters and do some shopping.
The design for each level is good, but they’re pretty empty in terms of gameplay. Each character has their own fighting style and move set that you can mess around with. In general, the game is dungeon crawling with hunts of Dungeons and Dragons and a lot of loot. There’s never a shortage of enemies but you’re only ever mashing the same button or two for attacks. It’s very simple and gets stale quick.
If Dice of Destiny has more substance or was cheaper, it would have been a must buy. But the game is pretty lackluster in a few areas. The nostalgia is great and being able to play as your favorite characters is always fun. But there isn’t much else. The characters and voice acting are great, but they’re the only good part of the game.
The gameplay is overly simple and sometimes too easy. Even on harder difficulties, there was never enough gameplay variety or challenges. It’s easy to finish a level in minutes using just two buttons. The copious amounts of loot you will rarely use don’t add much to the gameplay experience either.
The $50 price tag is only going to apply to diehard Nickelodeon fans. Casual gamers aren’t going to get a ton of enjoyment. If the levels had more going on, or the price was closer to $20, Dice of Destiny would have been an easy recommend. In its current state, it’s a good game at best.
