Have you ever wanted a deadly bullet hell game with rougelite elements that also features cute and cuddly animals? Extremely Powerful Capybaras has exactly what you’re looking for. You play as a capybara and with each run, you enter an arena where you battle thousands of enemies.
I usually don’t care for bullet hell games at all, the last one that I played was the Miss Kobayashi one a few years ago. I just don’t usually care for the gameplay style, but I really liked this one because it was lots of fun. You start with a capybara with your weapon of choice, and after you kill a few enemies, you get to choose a special perk.
Each perk does a variety of things like increase the range of your weapon, give you a new passive weapon, give you more strength or HP, or something else. The more levels you gain, the more of these perks you unlock and they’ll either grant you new abilities or boost the ones that you have already unlocked. But at the same time, as you increase your level, the number of enemies that are attacking you will increase exponentially. So you have to be careful.
I don’t know if the game isn’t meant to be too challenging, but I personally had no problems with the gameplay. I picked the ninja capybara and always made sure to grab the punching fists and helpful strength and HO boosts. I was also using a switch 2 pro controller, and I used the left stick to move in very detailed circles to avoid getting hit. At first, surviving 15 minutes seemed like a daunting task, but once lots of enemies started filling the screen, I was having lots of fun.
By the time the 15 minutes were over, I didn’t even realize that so much time had passed. Then it was time to face the boss, which I beat easily, and in total I defeated nearly 6,000 enemies in that single run. After beating the boss, I went and did the next hardest stage and beat it with ease. Then I went and redid the first two stages over and over. By that point, the gameplay loop had become very addicting. After a few minutes of playing, you just become locked in and you forget how much time is passing.
If you fail to survive, it’s no big deal really. You just start using up all the coins you collected to buy permanent upgrades to the level up boosts. If you do manage to beat a level, you unlock special coins that improve your Capybara. This means you can easily farm the lower levels until your Capybara is right where you want it. Having such an upbeat soundtrack also helps to keep the game entertaining at all times.
Extremely Powerful Capybaras is definitely the kind of game that you can pick up and play for 20 minutes whenever you want. But you can also lose yourself for hours. If the game cost $19.99, I would say it’s a steal because I put in around 10 hours during my first week because it was mindless fun. But the game costs $5.99, that’s an insane price for something that’s this addicting. It’s even better if you add some friends to your game.
The only downsides are that the first few minutes of each level can feel slow and there aren’t that many stages. But you’re still going to get your money’s worth by the time you’ve cleared the first few stages.
