Lego 2K Drive was released to the world a few years ago and it was a game that I was really looking forward to for a while. But upon release, all the chatter surrounding the game seemed to be negative. The reviews were fairly bad, especially for the Switch version. People hated the micro transactions, there were allegedly lots of bugs, and the content was lackluster at the time. So I never tried it.
But in the two years since, the game has released multiple updates as well as a slight boost to performance thanks to the Switch 2. The price also dropped a lot recently, so I thought now would be the perfect time to finally play it. Is it worth playing Lego 2K Drive on the Switch 2 or should you steer clear of the game?
Lego 2K Drive features three core gameplay mechanics which are racing, open world driving, and car creation. The games story mode is where most of this comes into play. In the story mode, you play as an up and coming racer who wants to win the trophy in the sky. This is done by completing a long series of races, mini games, and career events.
The racing itself is fun, but the highlight of this mode is the open world experience. The world is broken into multiple biomes and they’re all pretty large. You don’t even have to go from race to race, you could just drive around all day breaking things if you like. When I first reached Big Butte County, I didn’t even bother with the career until I explored every inch of the area.
You don’t have to do the story mode if you want to get your races in, you can do a variety of them right away. Choose from regular arcade races, cup series, time trials, and a handful of mini games. That’s a lot of content for you to do by yourself, but there’s also a huge online aspect. There’s so much to do and yet I haven’t even talked about the biggest feature.
All players can use the entire Lego library to build the car of their dreams. Boot up the garage and use a mix of more than 300 unique Lego pieces and 120 colors to create whatever vehicle you want. Just want to jump into things? You can download and play with any of the thousands of custom cars that were already created.
It should be pretty obvious by now that the game has a ton of content, but how does it actually play? Honestly I thought it was pretty good. I played with the Switch 2 Pro Controller and thought drifting and quick turns felt really good. Even when you’re going really fast and breaking a ton of stuff, the game feels responsive and smooth. There was never anything that hurt the experience.
My only complaints with the game is that the Premium DrivePass is pretty expensive and far creation loses some of its luster when there’s already so many custom cars to dive right into. But other than that, I think it’s a really good game. Lego 2K Drive isn’t trying to be a serious racing game, it’s your standard arcade racer, and it’s great at what it does. At $30 it’s a solid pickup but if you can get it for $20 or less, it’s an easy steal.
