I love a good, long visual novel. Sure there’s a ton of reading involved, but they are a great method for telling long and interesting stories. But sometimes a short visual novel comes along that has the same effect on me. Sacrifice For Sale is one such game. It’s a very short visual novel that I haven’t heard of until a week ago, and I just adore it.
You play as a door to door salesman who’s tasked with finding new homes for vacuum cleaners. Unfortunately you stumble upon the wrong house and end up being held hostage by its residents who wish to use you as a sacrifice for their cult. Your new goal is to use your power of persuasion to get them to let you go. The only problem is that there’s a lot of ways this can go wrong.
There must be hundreds of choices to be made. Every time there’s a choice, you can pick a response or choose to be quiet, both of which will have different effects. Sometimes there will be multiple options in addition to staying quiet. Each option has the chance of sending the story in a wildly different direction towards a different ending.
Save yourself, join the cult, get yourself murdered horribly, or even fall in love. There are so many ways that the story can go, which offers a ton of replayability. Fortunately, each story is rather short, so once you reach one ending, it won’t take you long to make your way back to new content. During my first playthrough, it only took me around 20 minutes to reach one of the endings, which ended up being one of the sweeter ones. Then I immediately jumped back in for more.
I skipped through a lot of the stuff that I had already gotten through and only read new content. So in one hour I was able to get through five different endings and they were all wildly different. I enjoyed going through the story multiple times because the story and characters were genuinely interesting. Depending on the options you take, the two cult members you’re interacting with can range from being the most violent beings you’ve ever encountered to being incredibly sweet.
Going from one ending to another was kinda sad in a way when I saw how much their personalities and actions changed, but you get to learn so much about them and I ended up living both of them. The character designs and music also add so much to the experience.
Sacrifice For Sale has a weird plot and it’s very simple. But the plot and your interactions with the characters are truly great. If you only play the game for one ending and then don’t replay it, you won’t get much for the $10 price tag. But there’s more than a dozen endings and more than 30,000 words. If you like this kind of story, you’ll have a great time going through it multiple times. I played this game on the Switch, but it also came out on other consoles and has been available on Steam for a year. You should check out any of the versions.
