I finally did it. After playing games like Be My Horde and Extremely Powerful Capybaras, I finally got around to playing the OG Vampire Survivors. Originally I had no interest in the game, but after playing similar games, I wanted to see if the hype was really worth it. Since the game has been out for a while, this is a mix between a review and an essay on finally playing it after so long.
The first thing that I noticed was that how didn’t understand how people were getting so many hours out of the game and getting so much replayability. Five runs was enough to unlock a bunch of characters and nearly all the upgrades that I would ever need. Money was easy to get thanks to the treasure chests, and after playing for two hours, I was no longer making a new progress. But that didn’t make the gameplay any less fun.
My favorite thing about the game was that after only a few minutes, the gameplay devolves into chaos. Each run became fast paced and overwhelming before I even noticed what was going. It might be a bit too difficult for casual gamers once you get close to ten minutes, but I really loved the chaos.
I also noticed that once I found two or three characters that I liked the most, I stuck with those and began to ignore the others that I unlocked. I must have found, unlocked, and bought more than twenty characters, but many of them were never used. But just because I didn’t utilize everything doesn’t mean that everyone will have the same experience.
I mentioned already that I quickly sprinted through most of the upgrades. After only a few hours, I was playing for fun, rather than for progress. In total, I put around 8 hours into the game and had a blast, which is fantastic for a game that only costs $5. Other people will get even more value thanks to the insane selection of characters and weapons.
I’m glad that I finally gave Vampire Survivors a chance after all this time. It’s a very budget friendly title that’s fast paced, chaotic, and lots of fun.
