Megabonk is a game that I’ve been hearing a lot about over the past two months, but it wasn’t until I got into Vampire Survivors earlier this month that I decided to give this one a try. I ended up playing for more than seven hours during my first two days after buying it because of how much fun I was having. Personally, I think it’s the exact same game as Vampire Survivors, but slightly more fun. Let me explain why I think that.
Megabonk is a roguelike where you run around a large map and kill thousands of enemies. As you level up, you can unlock or upgrade various weapons and tomes so that you can get stronger. There are also dozens of chests, shrines, and other structures that offer items all sorts of performance boosts. Each map has a bunch of tiers, bosses, challenges, and quests. Almost every aspect of the game is identical to Vampire Survivors, but there’s one huge difference.
All the rougelike games I have played in the past year had similar styles. Ones like Vampire Survivors and extremely Powerful Capybara used a pixelated top down perspective. Others like Adrenaline Rampage and Folly of the Wizard were 2D Platformers. Megabonk shakes things up by being 3D. The visuals may be simple, but each stage is basically an open world 3D map. With the extra D comes the ability to jump. This helps evade enemies or reach high places and it makes movement so much fun.
Megabonk doesn’t have as much content as something like Vampire Survivors because it’s still so new, but there’s still so much to do. There’s a huge list of characters, weapons, tomes, items, challenges, and quests to unlock. You’re going to die a lot but it will all be worth it in the end when you finally beat a certain boss or unlock the last thing you wanted.
Megabonk is like so many other roguelike titles but it’s 3D gameplay and mix of chaos and absurd humor makes it such an exciting and addicting experience. The game only costs $10 and you should easily get a dozen hours out of it, if not more. If you’re a fan of games like Vampire Survivors and Hades, you’ll really enjoy the Megabonk experience and should strongly consider picking it up.
