Earlier this year, I found out about A Game About Digging A Hole because one of the YouTubers I watch played it and made a video about it. I watched them play the entire game and then I watched someone else play it and then a third person. I never got bored, and now the game is on the Nintendo Switch and despite already seeing so many playthroughs of the game, I wanted to try it out for myself.

The game is very simple and straightforward. You buy a really cheap house that claims to have treasure in the backyard, and with your trusty shovel, you get to digging. The deeper you go, the more ore and secrets you unearth. The game is a bit slow at first because the starter shovel is puny and you always have to keep an eye on your energy and health.

But as you start trading ore for money and buying upgrades, the game becomes quicker and way more fun. You can upgrade your shovel, inventory, energy, and jetpack. After an hour, using your high power drill to obliterate everything in your way is super satisfying. You can even buy a bunch of dynamite for extra fun.

The game is a relatively short experience with your first playthrough taking an hour or two. If you want to forgoe progression in favor of just digging, you can spend hours. There’s also an achievement system that unlocks after you beat the game for the first time. There’s a lot of content and the game is very satisfying, but there are a few minor issues.

For starters, the game has a lot of lag. I played docked and the game would constantly freeze for a second or two. This happened a lot, sometimes multiple times per minute. There were also some lighting and rendering issues, but nothing too serious.

It’s such a relaxing game at its core. You’re just digging a hole, collecting all the resources, upgrading stuff, and continuing the cycle over and over until the very end. It’s such a simple and mediocre task but it has the same effect that games like Powerwash Simulator had. A Game About Digging A Hole is very time consuming and repetitive but it’s incredibly satisfying. Part of the marketing for the game includes the fact that it costs as much as a cup of coffee, and that’s still true for the Switch version.

4.5/5
