love quirky little games, but I never bothered to play Helltaker until earlier this month. I’ve been seeing images from the game for more than a year but I haven’t even bothered to look into where they were from until recently. After looking at the steam page, I was pretty impressed. The game looked interesting, it had very good reviews, and it was free, so I had to give it a shot.
It’s a puzzle game with hot demon ladies. You go to hell to collect your own harem. I’m not gonna lie, I had so much trouble with the puzzles that I almost gave up on many of them. Some of them I was able to figure out on my own, some of them I looked up guides, and some of them I just straight up skipped. I have no idea how people managed to do some of the harder puzzles at the start.
When you complete a puzzle you have a little dialogue and a choice to make. Making the right choice adds the demon to your harem but picking the wrong one kills you and you have to do the puzzle over. The puzzles themselves are decent, despite many of them being really hard. If you love puzzles, you’ll get a real kick out of them.
But if you just want the story and the demons, all you have to do is skip the puzzles and jump right into the dialogue. There’s only a handful of puzzles that you need to do and skipping them all for the story can see the game finish in under 30 minutes. Actually doing all the puzzles or doing the bonus stages can add a few extra hours to your playtime.
Despite playing for under an hour, I grew to love all the characters and had a lot of fun with the game when the puzzles weren’t pissing me off. If this was a $5 game, it would be worth it, but it being free makes it an easy recommendation. People who love puzzles and people who just want the demons will get an equal amount of satisfaction out of the game.
