I love video games, but no matter how many I play, there are always ones that I miss. Sometimes really good games get overlooked, and Ink Inside is one such game. A week ago was my first time hearing about the game and I was initially going to skip it. That was until I found out that Brian David Gilbert was involved, and I immediately wanted to check it out.

I have many memories of watching him during the ancient days of Youtube. I really like him because he’s super funny but I haven’t been seeing much of him lately. Finding out he voiced the protagonist in Ink Inside drew me to the game without knowing anything else about it. But boy am I glad that I gave the game a chance because I had so much fun.

You play as a guy named Stick. He wakes up in a hand drawn world and his memories are all fuzzy. Turns out the world and its inhabitants are drawings from a kid named Hannah. I like the way the game portrays this because it’s a mix between hand drawn gameplay and real world footage. When Stick realizes this, he has a sort of mental breakdown and then is immediately thrown into the fire by having to face off against enemies.

In the real world, Hannah’s notebooks are stored in a closet, but there’s a lean in the ceiling and her books are getting wet. This causes some characters to get soggy and turns them into enemies and the only way to fix them are to beat them up in dodgeball. Ink Inside features an interesting story, great characters, great voice acting, and a great art style but the dodgeball gameplay is the GOAT.

Gameplay is simple, you just knock out your opponents before they can knock you out. The dodgeball mechanics and physics were really good and controls were smooth. But above all else, it was a lot of fun. Ink Inside has so many good things going on, but it was the combat that hooked me after only two battles.

The game is such an indie gem. It’s quirky and it’s obvious that the developer put a lot of effort into everything. The game was initially released on Steam more than a year ago and finally ported to Switch and it’s kinda sad that it’s been overlooked all this time. It only costs $9.99 and more people need to play it.

4.5/5
