Before this month, I had very little experience with Final Fantasy VII. I only played the original for an hour and I never played the remake because it was tied to my PlayStation Plus. I always knew how important the original game was and that the remake was significantly better. I just never had a chance to play it until the Switch 2 version came out.

And oh boy am I glad that I finally played it. I personally believe that Remake is one of the four best JRPG’s ever and I think that the Switch 2 version is the best one of them all. It’s basically the same game as the original. But at the same time, it’s also a completely different game that’s been built from the ground up. This makes for an insane RPG experience that everyone needs to play.

The visuals and models were completely redone using a next gen engine. There’s full voice acting and an updated soundtrack. The cinematography and direction is phenomenal. Possibly the biggest change is the drastic overhaul to the combat system. The game is a cinematic masterpiece with one of the best RPG stories and an action RPG system that’s detailed, challenging, and fun.

But let’s be real. Most people aren’t here to read about the game itself. Cloud’s story is the same as it’s been on the original game nearly thirty years ago and all the upgrades in the remake are already six years old. Most people already played the original or remake or already know the legend of the game. You’re likely here to find out whether all that translates well to the Switch 2 version.

The answer is going to be yes every time. Remake is already an amazing game, but I think the Switch 2 version is the best version for several reasons. The biggest reason is the handheld capabilities. Being able to play such an amazing game both on the TV and in handheld mode is a huge plus. I mostly played docked with a Switch 2 Pro Controller but occasionally played in handheld mode while lying in bed and both modes were great. Overall performance was really good in both instances as well.

This version of the game is also the most complete and most cost-efficient version. This is not a port of the original PS4 version from 2020. The original Remake was already really good, but this is a port of the enhanced PS5 Intergrade version that came out in 2021. Intergrade includes better visuals and load times and an extra story revolving around Yuffie.

The Switch 2 version is also launching at $40, matching the current Steam price. This is the same price for both digital versions and physical game key cards. For a game that can take you between 30 and 60 hours to beat despite only being the first act, $40 is a crazy price. Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a must buy, regardless of if you played it before or not. It’s the definitive version of one of the best JRPG’s of all time.

5/5
