A few days ago I was browsing the recently released games list on Steam and I found an interesting title called Power Fantasy. It’s a slimmed down version of Vampire Survivors, it’s verified on the Steam Deck, and it’s completely free. You can’t argue with free, so I gave it a shot, and I thought it ended up being pretty good.

Unlike Vampire Survivors and other similar games like Megabonk, this game includes a little base area that you can run around in. In this area you can upgrade your characters, look at your stats and unlocks, and pick a stage which is called a depth. Right now there’s just one basic forest stage and there’s a seasonal christmas one too.

These stages are similar to the stages of other similar games where you run around the map and try to survive as long as possible while defeating hoards of enemies. But that’s where all the similaritiesend.

Each level in a depth is pretty short, only lasting a few minutes, and you could face as much as a thousand enemies as well as between three and six mini bosses. Every time you defeat an enemy, you gain experience points and sometimes gold and rubies. When you level up, you get to choose from one of three upgrades that will permanently affect your turn.

There are no weapons, tomes, or relics like in other similar games. There’s just a variety of perks and modifiers that boost your stats or game conditions. You can seemingly carry as many as you like as well. You also get companions, which are like pets but do some fighting for you. For the most part, combat is relatively slow but can get chaotic quickly.

Once the timer hits zero you face off against a tough boss. Beat it and you can spend your hard earned gold at the shop to buy more companions and perks. Then it’s off to the next stage where harder enemies and bosses await. Beat all the stages and your run is a success but if you die, you need to improve your stats and try again.

This can be done back at your base where you spend your rubies on skill points that give you valuable permanent buffs and other stuff. The more you play, the more you unlock. This includes extra characters, companions, and buffs. Once you clear a run once, you might not find a reason to keep playing, but I think it’s going to take you a while to clear your first run.

The game is hard. I made it to the second stage on my first run and died. Then I died again and again and again. When I made it to the stage three boss (which I defeated on my first attempt) I was already two hours into the game. Plus I was playing on the easiest difficulty. It took me about four to five hours to beat a run for the first time and I haven’t been able to beat the Christmas themed depth yet.

Power Fantasy is fun but tough and you’re only going to get between four and eight hours out of it if you try to beat both depths. If this was a $5 or $10 game, I’d say it’s worth it. But it’s a free game so that makes it even better. Maybe you give up after an hour because it’s too hard and that will be fine. Plus the game is still so new, maybe there will be updates in the future with more depths or DLC being added to the game. Check it out if you get a chance.

4/5
