I’m going to do a full review of You and I Are Polar Opposites later this month, but I just had to talk about the show now. I began watching it a few weeks ago but I wasn’t expecting to keep up with it. I’ve been hit with romance fatigue over the past few years because of all the harems and ecchi, so my expectations were really low. But by the end of the first episode, it was already one of my favorites.
There’s no will they won’t they and no random weirdness. The main couple are Tani and Suzuki, and they get together by the end of the first episode. Tani is the quiet and socially rigid boy while Suzuki is very outgoing and sometimes off the rails. I don’t care for Tani too much but I love Suzuki’s antics and personality. Most of the show is just about them learning how to date and work around their differences.
It’s solid. But it’s honestly the supporting cast that really got me interested. In the third episode, there was a new character introduced named Taira and he basically became the protagonist for that episode. The same thing happened in episode 5 with a girl named Nishi. Both of the characters have great moments.
The show doesn’t focus on the main couple and nothing else. Or the main couple and then a bunch of other girls who are trying to butt in. The show gives all the people in the friend group their time to shine and really makes you fall in love with some of them. But that’s not all, because all the characters are actually super relatable, and that’s part of why I love the show so much.
Most romance anime just show a series of random misunderstandings to make you laugh, or some of the strangest and cringiest moments. Even some of the best ones do. But this one perfectly balances humor, relatability, and mature moments to really make you feel something about the characters. By the end of the third episode, I was pretty confident that it would be in my top 3 romance anime.
Now that we’re 8 episodes in, I think it’s going to overtake Toradora to become my favorite romance anime because it’s just so special in every area.
