Fallout 4 will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s one of the rare games that I’ve spent more than 100 hours on that wasn’t a JRPG. As such, it sits comfortably as one of my top 20 games of all time. But I’ve only ever played the base version on PS4. I never touched any of the enhancements or DLC, yet I still had the time of my life.
So, when it was announced that the game would be coming to the Switch 2 with all the bells and whistles, I was really excited. The game has been around for more than a decade, so I won’t be explaining much about it. It’s the same game as the original, just with some improvements here and there. But is it worth revisiting again?
This was maybe my third time replaying the game and I was hooked right from the beginning even though I already knew everything about the game. I watched the opening cutscene, I listened to every piece of dialogue during that first hour. I nearly cried when I encountered Dogmeat. I even felt the same rage when I was fending off the Raiders only for the Deathclaw to appear.
I’ve already done everything the game had to offer a decade ago, but I had so much joy doing it all over again now. I picked up every piece of scrap I could find, upgraded everything I could, and attempted to build the house of my dreams. I did all that at every chance I had, sometimes drifting away from the story for hours at a time to just do whatever I wanted.
But then the game gave me even more since this is the Anniversary Edition. The game includes more than 150 Creation Club items, which include things like additional armor, weapons, dogs, and skins. All the previous expansions are also included like Far Harbor, which include new story and places to explore.
I never bothered playing the game in handheld mode. I played docked with a Switch 2 Pro Controller and the game ran great. It felt like I was playing the original with the PS4 controller but better. Aiming was smooth. Combat was fun, and movement was really good overall. There were minimal issues and the game was too much fun to bother with them.
You’re paying $60 for a ten-year-old game that you probably already beat once or twice but it’s definitely worth it. Even if you’re just playing the base game, you’ll have the time of your life for dozens of hours. But when you add in all the expansions and Creation Club items, there’s so much more to do and you can easily spend 100 or even 200 hours.
