Have you ever wanted to play a cross between OlliOlli World and Spyro the Dragon? Well now you can, even if that thought never crossed your mind in the first place. This is where a game called Seafrog joins the party. It’s a swashbuckling, skateboarding, 2D platformer starting a frog. If you thought that was a strange combo, it only gets weirder from there, but oh boy is it a fun game.
You play as a frog who wakes up on an abandoned ship and you decide to claim it for yourself. You have a wrench that allows you to fix leaks but it also doubles as a skateboard. Grinding on rails and doing tricks builds up a power bar that allows you to boost and make it to hard to reach places. I found the skateboarding mechanic to be quite fun but sometimes getting to specific areas was a pain.
Plenty of times there was an area that I need to reach but I didn’t have enough boost so I would spend thirty or forty seconds doing tricks just so I could reach that area. But doing the boost and riding the walls and ceiling is pretty physics based so I would sometimes fall off track or not go where I wanted. But with trial and error, you can become quite experienced with the controls, especially if you’re playing on a controller.
Throughout the game you’re collecting various kinds of resources and fixing leaks. These open up new areas and increase the power of your ships canon. You can load yourself into the canon and fire yourself towards other abandoned ships that are in your area. These serve as individual worlds and each offer a ton of exploring to do and secrets to be found.
With each ship, you also collect stuff to bring back to your ship so that you can repair it, which is usually followed by a boss battle. There were quite a few times where I thought these battles were hard, but you can upgrade your frog using mod chips. You can increase things like health and boost speed or pair random buffs together. These aren’t stats that you increase like most RPG’s, you have to equip mods that alter your stats while equipped.
While Seafrog is a very chill and cozy game, the mechanics could become a bit difficult for some people. I already mentioned how the controls can be a bit unforgiving, and boss battles might be a bit tough. People who love challenging games will enjoy this, but you’re also going to have a lot of fun skateboarding around the ship.
You’re also going to love how the game looks. The art style is really fun and I love the designs. For $15, you’re going to get between 10 and 15 hours out of the game, and it’s all going to be a blast.
