I love boomer shooters. Really, I absolutely adore them. The fact that there is so many on the Switch fills me with joy, even better that they’re all getting fantastic ports. Now, this is something that had drawn me to Gastro Force. I did not enjoy this game. But lord help me I tried.

The first and biggest issue for me is aiming. You can aim up and down, but for a most of that early game, you’re never going to have to. It’s going to be a detriment to you when all you need to do is aim straight to destroy hitscan enemies. I found more often than not, the melee weapon, a pipe is the best weapon to use because of this. It’s even stronger than the handgun sometimes. None of it feels good and guns all feel the same. A shotgun should feel amazing, it should feel strong, it should make things feel chunky. It doesn’t. In Gastro Force, it’s just the handgun, but it shoots three shots at once. You can be right next to an enemy and miss.

But hey, lets look past all of that. I like the sprites, the music is pretty good, even if it gets repetitive. Backgrounds are boring and you’ll often just get lost if you don’t pull up the minimap. At the very least, you can find secrets, but it’s mostly just healing items and ammo, almost as if the game is apologizing to you.

Final Thoughts

Gastro Force is a game in desperate need of an update patch. Rebalance some thing, add gyro aiming. For the price, most of the issues are things to just look past or ignore. But if aiming and shooting doesn’t quite gel…then it’s not going to work. Please please please please update this game.
